Medellin is the second largest Colombian city. It is the capital of the Antioquia Department, founded in the year 1616. In the past, it was considered as one of the planet's most dangerous cities, the city of "sikarios" (teenager bands) and drug trafficking organizations. It was once called as the "The Murder Capital of the World", the home of the infamous Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Drug Cartel. It has never been known as a prime tourist destination but in the past decade, with security improving more and more tourists are visiting Medellin. The word is getting out to know what a great place Medellin is to visit.
The world famous Colombian artist and sculptor Fernando Botero has brought this change with the help of culture and arts. He gave Medellin the "Botero city", with a 30 thousand sq. m square where a museum, sculpture park, galleries, art studios and recreation zones can be found. Modern infrastructure, year round spring like climate, excellent schools and universities, upscale malls and accommodations, great restaurants and very friendly people have added up to the image of Medellin as safe tourist destination.
Medellin also offers plenty for the tourists to see. The main attractions are Basilica de la Candelaria, Basilica Metropolitana (built in the beginning of the XX century, the largest brick church in South America), Pueblito Paisa - the exact copy of a typical local village with numerous handicraft shops, Plaza La Macarena, Museo de Antioquia as well as a university, two stadiums and of course the well-known Botanical Garden with its famous collection of orchids.
The locals, known as Paisas (pie-suhz), have also been working to change the image of Medellin's past. The Paisas are very inviting and have opened up their city to visitors from around the world interested in learning more about Colombian culture, history, music and most importantly the warmth of the Colombian people. They are very friendly and are happy to help and assist tourists in making their stay a comfortable one.
All these factors have contributed in making Medellin one of the most sought after destinations in South America. So what are you waiting for, visit Medellin and enjoy the best it has to offer.
